Marina Nou Fontana proposes special plan to expand Fontana Canal in Xàbia
The port concessionaire, Marina Nou Fontana S.L., has submitted an initial document to process a special plan that would expand and reorganise the Fontana Canal in Xàbia, with an estimated investment of €6,660,552. The project, dated June 2026, is in the initial stage of processing.
Marina Nou Fontana S.L., the current port concessionaire, has submitted an initial document to Xàbia Town Council and the relevant regional authority for infrastructure and ports to process a special plan that would expand and reorganise the Fontana Canal, including the urbanisation of adjacent land in polygon H. The total scope of the plan covers 33,816.16 square metres, of which 4,899.75 correspond to water surface, 3,290.84 to pedestrian space and 5,953.71 to new roads.
The document includes a road in Calle En Proyecto of 18.70 metres wide, with a 6-metre carriageway and 132 parking spaces, plus a further 92 spaces on Avenida Augusta, totalling 224 spaces across both areas. The construction of a municipal building of 200 square metres is also planned, with a maximum height of 6 metres and two storeys.
Investment and extension of the concession
The estimated investment for the project amounts to €6,660,552, of which €492,414.37 corresponds to technical and legal expenses. The scenario presented includes an extension of the concession term by 15 years. According to the document, the objective is to increase port capacity, improve navigation safety and urbanise the land alongside the canal, as well as compensate for the loss of moorings resulting from the adaptation of the concession to current regulations.
Flood risk and environmental processing
The document identifies a flood hazard level 2 in the canal and level 4 in part of the rest of the area. For a return period of 500 years, flood hazard exceeds 2 metres. The project is proposed to be processed through a simplified strategic environmental and territorial assessment, with environmental monitoring reports expected every two years.
Initial phase of the process
The project is in the initial stage of processing and does not constitute a final approval, as public information and environmental assessment procedures remain to be completed. The indicative schedule estimates approximately one year of processing until the plan enters into force.
