Education removes one 2nd ESO group from IES Chabàs in Dénia mid-term

The Department of Education has decided to remove a 2nd ESO group at IES Historiador Chabàs in Dénia, a measure communicated at the end of September, with the 2025-2026 academic year already underway. In exchange, a new 1st ESO group has been added, which the centre had requested last May.

1st ESO had started the year with only four groups and around 30 students per class. Following the expansion, each group will have approximately 25 students and around 25 places in total will remain empty. In contrast, 2nd ESO goes from five to four groups, which means the ratio rises from around 20 students per class to 25.

The removed 2nd ESO group is transferred to one of the schools in Xàbia, which had requested that place. According to La Marina Plaza, the 2nd ESO groups were already configured at Chabàs, with tutors, timetables and programmes assigned before the change was announced.

The decision has caused discontent amongst students, teaching staff and families at the centre, who have organised a gathering at the main entrance of the school in defence of the quality of public education.

According to La Marina Plaza, the removal of the group would allow the department to avoid expanding staff despite the creation of the new 1st ESO group. The same source points out that, for now, 2nd ESO will not suffer from overcrowding, although it could approach saturation as the year progresses if further enrolments occur.
