Dénia converts 2nd ESO class at Chabàs to open new 1st ESO group amid overcrowding

The council's Education adviser, Melani Ivars, has responded to criticism following the announcement that IES Historiador Chabàs will lose a 2nd ESO group next academic year. According to the adviser, the decision does not stem from a reduction in resources, but rather a reorganisation of units agreed at municipal level to respond to real enrolment needs.

Full classes in first year

Ivars has explained that the underlying problem lies in the first year of secondary education, where, according to her figures, there is not a single free place left in any of Dénia's centres. Faced with this pressure, the council submitted a technical proposal to the Consellería: taking advantage of the fact that the Chabàs had more than one 2nd ESO line with vacant places, convert one of them into a new 1st year group, thereby avoiding the creation of an additional unit from scratch.

Origin in Educational Inspection

It was Educational Inspection that detected these uncovered places in second year, which served as the basis for the change finally approved. The adviser defends the use of this reassignment mechanism as more efficient than increasing the total number of groups in the centre. "The administrative procedure and optimisation of resources is completely correct and justified," Ivars stated.

Schedule adjustments at the centre

The adviser acknowledges, however, that the measure comes at an awkward time for the internal organisation of the institute, which had already finalised its planning for the new academic year. This now forces the management team and teaching staff to redo timetables and the teaching distribution to accommodate the new 1st ESO group. Despite this setback, the council insists that the reorganisation seeks to guarantee that all students enrolled in Dénia have a place available.
