The voting result
The Socialist proposal aimed to halt an expansion of 60 additional moorings in the Fontana Canal, but it did not pass. Only the Socialists and the Vox councillor voted in favour; the PP and Ciudadanos por Jávea voted against, and Compromís per Xàbia abstained.
A 2017 concession
According to Compromís per Xàbia, the projected expansion complies with the limits set by a concession granted in 2017.
Procedural objections
The group considered that "the project was presented in a closed committee meeting. We made our opposition to the increase in moorings clear right there. Surprisingly, the next day the project was already in the press. And now a motion arrives demanding an immediate political stance from the groups on a proposal that doesn't even have a case number". In its view, "this is not opposition: it is creating a provoked situation that forces the other parties to take a position on a document without formal procedures". Compromís added that "no one has been able to explain what real urgency there is. There is no deadline approaching or any danger to the project. There is only a political calendar manoeuvre that seeks to position us, and that is why we don't support the urgency". The group also lamented that "it has acted on its own account, without talking to the rest of the opposition, or even with groups that share similar concerns about the port and city model. That is not building an alternative: that is seeking prominence".
Position on the port
Compromís per Xàbia insists that "we state, as we always have, that we are against port expansions and more moorings, especially now. We will not act like other parties that change their minds depending on whether they are in government or opposition". The group stressed that "they will not drag us into a forced photo opportunity".
Requests for the future
Compromís per Xàbia demands that "the project be addressed in the Town Planning Council with transparency and public debate" and calls for "a solution to the urbanisation of the end of Vía Augusta, without linking it to an operation we do not support". The group concludes that "it holds the key to this debate, and will use it responsibly. We will not accept being presented as a shadow government or as anyone's subjects: we work with our own criteria and thinking of Xàbia".
