Young man injured in chest during Gata de Gorgos festival firerun
A resident of El Campello suffered a chest wound when a pyrotechnic device malfunctioned during the Sant Miquel firerun. The council has opened an investigation to determine what happened.
The Sant Miquel patron saint festival in Gata de Gorgos was disrupted by an incident during the traditional correfoc, in which a young man from El Campello ended up with a wound to his chest. The incident occurred, according to LaMarinaAlta.com, when one of the pyrotechnic elements used in the spectacle did not behave as expected.
Local Police, Civil Protection and Red Cross officers attended the scene to assist the injured man and carry out his evacuation. He was subsequently transferred to a hospital, where he was expected to undergo surgery on Sunday in Alicante.
Council reaction
Councillor Joanvi Vallés referred to the young man's condition, stating: "all things considered, the lad is well".
The council has launched an investigation aimed at clarifying how the accident occurred. The council has cooperated with the Guardia Civil, to which it has provided documentation related to the hiring of the company responsible for the firerun.
The local government has expressed its intention to closely monitor both the recovery of the injured young man and the conclusions reached by the ongoing investigation.
