Dénia observes minute's silence for machismo-related crime victim in Benidorm
The council joined the Valencian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces on 29 September in condemning the violent death of Meriane, 33 years old.
At 12:00, municipal representatives gathered in front of Dénia Town Hall to observe silence in memory of Meriane, a 33-year-old woman whose body was found in a rural area between Benidorm and Finestrat. The gesture responded to a call made by the Valencian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces to councils throughout the Valencian Community.
The Ministry of Equality has classified the crime as a case of gender-based violence. The National Police arrested three men in connection with the incident: the victim's partner, identified as the alleged perpetrator, and two other individuals being investigated for possible covering up of the crime.
According to Dénia.com, there were no prior reports of gender violence between the woman and her partner. The case remains under investigation, with not all details of the incident yet resolved.
Institutional solidarity
Dénia council issued a message of support and sympathy to the victim's family and loved ones, in line with the joint response of other Valencian municipalities to such incidents.
The authorities reminded that the 016 telephone line remains available free of charge and confidentially for any woman suffering gender-based violence, as well as for those close to her.
