Dénia links two spine operations with national medical meeting in València
Dénia University Hospital broadcast two endoscopic spine operations live to the course before the III Congress of the SECPEC, held at the City of Arts and Sciences, where more than a hundred specialists followed the transmission.
Two operations followed remotely
The Traumatology and Neurosurgery teams at the Dénia centre carried out two procedures that were observed in real time by national and international specialists gathered in València. The first operation consisted of endoscopic decompression to treat lumbar canal stenosis, whilst the second was an endoscopic lumbar fusion aimed at correcting vertebral instability, with placement of an interbody cage.
A technique established at the centre years ago
The hospital was pioneering in the Valencian Community when it began applying endoscopic spine surgery in 2017. According to the data provided, this approach resolves around 80% of the most common vertebral problems using cannulae of just 8 millimetres or 1 centimetre in diameter, which reduces tissue damage and speeds up recovery. In fact, a large part of patients are discharged on the same day as the operation or a few hours afterwards.
The organiser's assessment
Traumatologist José Lizón Aguilar, heading the congress organising committee, emphasised the value of this type of broadcast for medical training. In his words, he highlighted "the possibility of seeing surgical procedures live and learning firsthand how these minimally invasive techniques are developed".
A congress with broad participation
The meeting, organised by the Spanish Society for Percutaneous and Endoscopic Spine Surgery, brought together in its biennial edition around 130 surgeons specialising in vertebral pathologies. Before the congress proper, around fifty professionals took part in a practical course on anatomical models, where they prepared for the subsequent session of live surgeries from Dénia.
