Benissa Town Council made the draft of the future day centre available for public consultation last week. The project plans for 100 places and opening is scheduled for late 2027, as La Marina Times reported when this process began.

The political group Reiniciem Benissa has questioned the project and demands guarantees from the ruling administration. According to the group, only 10 of the 100 planned places would be reserved for Benissa residents, a figure it considers insufficient given the approximately 4,000 inhabitants over 60 years old it estimates the municipality has.

The mayor, Arturo Poquet, stated that all places at the future centre will be public. Reiniciem Benissa maintains, however, that there is no document guaranteeing how many places the Valencian regional government will fund and that the mayor could not specify that figure when asked.

The group also questions whether the building has real capacity for 100 users. Comparing a municipal space needs report with the project plans, it estimates the real capacity would be around 55 people, and adds that, according to its interpretation of the documentation, ten toilets would be necessary for the announced capacity, a figure the project would not reach.

Reiniciem Benissa also denounces that the Town Council intends to cede the use of the municipal land on calle Sueca for 50 years to an association without holding a competitive tender, which it believes would prevent comparing other proposals. The group warns that although the entity in charge presents itself as non-profit, the documentation would not prevent the centre from passing to a profit-making entity after the first 10 years for the remaining 40 years of the planned period.

"Benissa needs its day centre, and it needs it now," Reiniciem Benissa stated, recalling that it has been demanding this facility for years and noting that currently families in the municipality must take their elderly relatives to Teulada or other towns to receive daytime care.
