Esquerra Unida del País Valencià has announced that its branch in Dénia will run independently in the 2027 municipal elections, placing the problem of housing access at the heart of its electoral discourse. The party has chosen to delay the official presentation of the candidacy until after the general elections on 29 November, without this changing its electoral calendar.
The party cites data showing a 49.6% increase in median monthly rent between 2015 and 2024. According to asking prices recorded in August 2026, the cost of renting a 60 square-metre flat would be around €816 per month, rising to €1,224 for a 90 square-metre property. According to its calculations, a waiter earning the gross annual salary set by collective agreement, €19,635, would spend almost half his income on rent for a 60 square-metre flat.
EUPV stresses that, based on 2023 personal income tax returns, 5.1% of taxpayers with income above €60,000 accumulate 25.7% of the municipal taxable income. The party adds that, according to INE data, Dénia had 2,926 tourist accommodation properties in May 2026, and questions the amendment to the ordinance approved in August by PSPV and Compromís, which increased from 15% to 25% the permitted proportion of this type of housing between Camí del Llavador and the beach, also extending compatible areas to Loreto, Les Roques and Sant Pere.
The party calls on the municipal government to provide a balance sheet of results on housing and questions its management of the area. Among measures underway, it mentions the call for 46 homes from the Casa 47 project and the plan to build another 146 on the land of the former railway workers' site.
Proposals
Among its proposals, EUPV defends launching a first public housing rental programme with permanently public ownership, at rents not exceeding 30% of families' net income. It also proposes free urban transport for those living in the municipality, with timetables adapted to work shifts. The party stated: "anyone who works in Dénia should be able to live in Dénia".
The party highlights that the combined total of votes for PSPV, Compromís, Podemos and EUPV fell from 10,969 in 2019 to 9,752 in 2023, a period in which PP and Vox increased their representation from three to eight councillors. EUPV rules out supporting a future municipal government led by PP and Vox, although it does not close the door to agreements that would allow a left-wing majority to be sustained. The final content of its programme, including the cost, financing and deadlines for measures, has yet to be defined.
