Ondara approves over €116,000 in social, educational and sporting grants, with new housing support scheme
Ondara Town Council brought to its September ordinary plenary session a budget modification that includes, for the first time, a fund to support housing rent payments, alongside increases in social aid, university transport and sport.
Ondara's municipal plenary held on 28 September 2026 voted on a budget modification—processed under procedure 14/2026—that mobilises over €116,000 designated for different lines of social, educational and sporting aid.
An unprecedented grant for tenants
Among the innovations stands out the creation of a subsidy scheme aimed at those paying rent, endowed with €30,000 and with a maximum amount of €200 per home, thus matching the aid hitherto received by property owners for the payment of council tax and refuse collection fees. The mayor, José Ramiro, explained that "with this new rental support scheme we extend municipal aid to more families and adapt our aid policies to the current reality of housing access. Until now we mainly helped owners with council tax and refuse collection fees, and now we are taking a further step so that people paying rent can also benefit from these municipal measures".
The mayor added that the intention of this allocation is "to facilitate access to and maintenance of the primary residence, especially in a context where many families have to devote a significant portion of their income to paying rent".
Increases in social aid, transport and sport
The budget modification also sets aside €70,000 for social aid related to the payment of council tax and refuse collection fees. On education, the allocation for transport for higher education students rises to €9,000, €4,000 more than in the previous financial year, when the allocation was €5,000. According to José Ramiro, with this increase the council aims to "continue helping our students with travel expenses associated with their academic training, which is why we are significantly increasing this budget line".
In sport, €5,000 is added in sports promotion grants, which replace the previous municipal sports schools system, whilst maintaining an allocation of €2,500 aimed at elite and high-performance athletes in Valencian pilota.
Next steps
Ondara Town Council has announced that in the coming weeks it will draw up the regulations that will set the conditions and deadlines for applying for these new aid schemes.
