Chief Superintendent Carlos Nieto of the National Police in Dénia gave an interview on Dénia FM on the occasion of the commemoration of 2 October, the Feast of the Guardian Angels, in which he explained the status of the new police station project and assessed public safety in Dénia.

The new police station

Nieto confirmed that negotiations are underway with Dénia Town Council for a new location of the police station within the same Miguel Hernández site, following the discovery of archaeological remains at the originally planned location. According to his explanation, modifying the original project to integrate those remains is not viable for the operational needs of the National Police. "We need a functional building," he stated. Nieto noted that the project has budgetary approval as it is included in the Interior Ministry's Infrastructure Plan 2026-2030.

Security assessment

Nieto said that if the trend continues, 2026 will close as the fourth consecutive year of decline in criminal incidents in Dénia. He asserted that the city is very safe and that police data support that perception, and highlighted the daily coordination between the National Police and the Dénia Local Police as one of the factors in public safety. He also noted that the National Police monitor the presence of professional criminal groups, both local and from outside the area, who commit robberies in homes, businesses and institutions.

The police chief warned that the high sense of security can lower people's guard among residents and visitors, which facilitates burglaries, especially in summer. He also indicated that the National Police are increasing surveillance against minor thefts from vehicles and vans left open.

Prevention and citizen collaboration

Nieto reminded that through the Plan Mayor, National Police officers give talks to older people about scams such as the "tocomocho" or distractions at cash machines, and warned about frauds by WhatsApp and SMS, including the deception of a supposed son asking for an urgent transfer from a new number. According to Nieto, citizen collaboration has helped resolve several criminal cases this year. "If you see anything strange, call 091," he urged, recalling that this is the direct telephone number of the National Police for public safety reports. "Caution, caution, caution," he concluded.
